Creating an Account & Logging In

Once you have launched Stendhal, the first thing you will need to do is make yourself an account. You can do this by clicking on the Create an Account button then filling in the fields on the new window that appears.

After your account has bee created you can proceed by clicking on the Login to Stendhal and typing in the Username and Password you had just made to log-in.

Stendhal's Game Screen

After you login to the PLDT Play Stendhal Server, a new window will appear similar to what you see on the right. This is the main Stendhal Game Screen. The Screen itself is separated into several component parts, each of which is labeled on the screenshot to the right and is described below :
  1. Minimap - The minimap shows your character's position with a cross. Red areas on the minimap are non-walkable.
  2. Player's Bag - This bag allows you to carry up to twelve items with you. If you close the bag and wish to open it again later, click on Settings (6) then on Player Inventory.
  3. Chat Line - This is where you can type text to speak with players and NPCs. You can type commands in here as well.
  4. Dialog Log - This stores a log of game messages and player messages that you have received in the current game session. It is very useful when you want to review what NPCs and other players have said.
  5. Character Window - This is where you can equip items like weapons and armor. It also give you a summary of your character's stats.
  6. Setting Window - This allows you to reopen the minimap, character window, and player bag if you close them at any point in time and then later wish to reopen them.
  7. Game Area - This represents the World in which you are actually playing.

Outfitting Your Character

When you first login to Stendhal with a new account, you will notice that your character will have a very generic look and will not have any clothes on.

Your first order of business will be to define the way your character looks. This can be done by first Right-Clicking on your character then selecting Set Outfit on the context sensitive menu that appears. This will cause a new Set Outfit window to appear. By using the arrows and sliders on the screen you can begin to customize your new character's hairstyle, head, body, and clothing. This should allow you to achieve the look you want your character to have.

Moving Your Character Around

Getting your character to walk around in Stendhal is pretty straight forward. Simply press one of your keyboard's corresponding arrow keys to walk in the appropriate direction. You will need to keep the key depressed in order to keep walking in a particular direction.

Walking into a doorway or towards the edge of a particular zone will cause you to move to a completely new area. Keep in mind that certain objects in the world including NPCs, monsters, and other players can block you from moving into a particular space.

You can also double click on an empty location on the map to move there. This is a particularly useful feature when you need to move through areas which are cluttered with obstacles.

Interacting with Objects

While movement is Stendhal is handled through the keyboard, interacting with objects in the game is handled by using the mouse. To find out whether you can interact with an object, you simply need to move the mouse cursor on the object and then Right-Click on it. This will bring up a context-sensitive menu. To actually perform an action on the object in question, you'd simply need to select one of the options on the menu and then Left-Click on it.

Alternatively, you could also simply Double-Click on the object in question. This will cause you to perform the default action on the object. Take note that in order to interact with an object you would normally have to be standing right next to it.

For instance, if you Right-Clicked on a chest, a menu giving you the option to either Look at or Open the chest will appear. Since the default action for a chest would be to open it, you decide to Double-Click on it,  you would open the chest without having to use the menu.

Picking Up, Dropping and Equipping Items

Dealing with items in Stendhal couldn't be any more simple. You can move items around by Left-Clicking on the item in question then while keeping mouse button depressed, moving the cursor to the location where you wish to move the item. Doing this is generally referred Dragging an item with your mouse.

By Dragging an item from the floor or from inside another container to your bag, for instance, you can pick things up. You will need to remember, however, that you can only to this if you are standing right next to the item or the container in question. This is particularly important to remember when picking things up from containers such as corpses since you can inspect a container from several feet away but won't be able to move around its contents unless you are directly next to the container in question.

You can also drop objects on the floor or move them into another container such as your bank chest by Dragging them from your bag to the desired location.

Finally you can equip and unequip armor and weapons by Dragging the items between your bag and the inventory slots on your character window. Your ATK and DEF ratings will automatically update as you equip and unequip items.

Interacting with NPCs

During your adventures in Stendhal you will meet many NPCs (Non-Player Characters) who can provide you with services that you may require. Several even offer quests for you to complete. To start a conversation with an NPC, you need simply approach them and say "Hello" by typing the word into your Chat Line then pressing Enter.

Once you have gotten an NPC's attention, you can continue typing text into your Chat Line to talk with them. Listed below are some common lines you can use when speaking to NPCs :

"Hello" (starts dialog with NPC) "Bye" (ends dialog with NPC)
"Job" (asks for what the NPC does) "Help" (asks how the NPC can help)
"Task" (asks the NPC if he offers any quests) "Offer" (asks the NPC what he buys & sells)
"Buy <amount> <item>" (buy item) "Sell <amount> <item>" (sell item)

When speaking to NPCs you should take note of any keywords that you come across. These words are normally highlighted in blue and when repeated to the NPC in question can often prompt the NPC to reveal important information to the player. Sometimes, NPCs will also ask questions to which you can reply with a simple "Yes" or "No".

Combat In Stendhal

You will meet many hostile creatures in Stendhal. Indeed, defeating them is often the key to improving your character and finding better equipment. To attack a creature you simply need to Right-Click on them and select Attack on the menu that appears. Since the default action when you encounter a creature is to attack them, Double-Clicking the creature in question will have the same effect.

Once you have done this, you will notice that a red box will appear around the creature you have elected to attack. The box indicates the creature that is your current target. Take note that you will not actually begin to attack your target until it comes in range. If you are using a melee weapons, this means that you must be standing right next to it. Some weapons such as bows and spears will allow you to attack from a distance, however. Once you get within range you will begin to attack immediately.

Once you actually attack a creature and it begins to fight back you will begin to notice red text numbers floating above your head as well as that of the creature. These indicate the amount of damage you are dealing and taking. As the combat wears on you will notice that the green Hitpoint Bars above you and your target will begin to empty. Once a creature's Hitpoint Bar is completely empty, it will die and leave a corpse behind. You can search this corpse for anything that the creature may have dropped by Right-Clicking on it then selecting Inspect or by simply Double-Clicking on it. Of course if you run out of Hitpoints you will die as well. When this happens you will respawn in a safe location but will loose a chunk of XP and may drop some of the equipment you have been carrying behind on a corpse in the location where you died. You can return to your corpse after you respawn to recover your items but you will need to hurry, your corpse will eventually decay, taking anything you left behind with it!

List of Commands

Commands in Stendhal are executed by typing them in the Chat Line. All commands are preceded by a Slash ("/") which signifies your intention to run a command rather than simply saying something. These commands can be quite useful for doing things that you normally wouldn't be able to do with Stendhal's simple interface. The table below lists all the commands you can use in Stendhal.
